Southern Veterans League Fixture 1, Battersea Park, 9th May 2011

A Men’s team somewhat depleted by injuries and absences travelled to Battersea for the first fixture in this year’s Southern Counties Veterans League. However, multiple performances from a number of athletes meant the team was still able to secure a solid second place. Hillingdon finished with 104 points ahead of Serpentine, St Mary’s, Ealing Southall & Middlesex and Metros and only behind perennial rivals Herne Hill Harriers on 127 points.

The team fared particularly well in the 400m with Jason Steele and Scott Farley taking maximum points and Dave Martin coming second in the M50 category. Another highlight was the 2000m walk with Ken Bobbett winning the M50 and Andy Cox finishing second in the M35 race. The field events saw Keith Seldon score maximum points in both the shot put and the discus while team captain Alan Butler provided strong support in both events, recording a personal best shot put performance and finishing third in the high jump.

The HAC women’s team also finished second with 97 points behind runaway winners Serpentine on 125 points. Maximum points in the women’s events were taken by Emma Humphrey with an excellent debut performance in the 1500m, Jo Miles in the 2000m walk and Christine Heemskerk in the W50 long jump. Meanwhile Maria Hernandez-Humm finished second in both the 100m and the long jump.
