Sunday 22nd March saw the Hillingdon 20, (formerly the Finchley 20) take place. The Hillingdon 20 is regarded as Britain’s oldest 20-mile road race, with a long history tied to marathon preparation, particularly the London and Manchester Marathons.
This years edition saw 360 starters, with the course being ran in reverse distance, as it was last year, following positive feedback! The race started at Hillingdon Athletic Club clubhouse at 9:00am.
The course
Spencer was lead bike, navigating runners around the 4-lap course. Starting off at Hillingdon Athletic Club, Runners took off along Bury Street and down onto Park Avenue. Runners then made a left-hand turn into Broadwood Avenue, making their way around the round-a-bout and back onto Park Avenue. Coming onto Elmbridge Drive, the course took runners briefly onto the Celandine Route and then making a right-hand turn onto the Fore Street. Climbing up Fore Street and then turning into Salisbury Road, which is where runners where met with the first of two water stations.
Turning onto the climb of Wiltshire Lane, taking runners past Haydon School. Making a right-hand turn onto Norwich Road, runners enjoyed a steep downhill, some recovery after some climbing! At the bottom of Norwich Road, runners turned onto the long and flat pavements of Joel Street.
Making their way past Eastcote Cricket Club, runners turned right onto Eastcote High Road and then back onto the Celandine Route, taking them over the River Pinn. Onto Mount Park Road, turning back onto Fore Street and then the stretch of Eastcote Road. The course then took runners down to Kings College Road, Evelyn Avenue which linked to Pinn Way, where runners were met with their second water station on the course.
Following Pinn Way until turning right, back onto Bury Street, runners would follow until turning back onto Park Avenue, which would mark 1 lap. The race finished at Hillingdon Athletic Club clubhouse.
Runners were presented with medals and homemade cakes prepared by members of Hillingdon Atheltic Club.
A huge congratulations to all participants, we hope you enjoyed the event and all the best for your future events!
A Thank You
Hillingdon Athletic Club would like to thank the local community for enabling us to host our annual Hillingdon 20 race.
The Hillingdon 20 raises valuable funds for the club, helping us provide equipment and support travel to athletics competitions for both our junior and senior athletes. Events like this play an important role in supporting grassroots sport in our community and giving local athletes opportunities to compete and develop.
Well done to everyone who participated, it was great to see you all and we hope you enjoyed the event!
There were over 60 volunteer marshals out on the course this morning, including members of Ruislip Running Club and local Police Cadets, who manned the water stations keeping everyone hydrated! A huge thank you to every single one of you for giving up your time to support the event and assist the runners. Your encouragement was felt by the runners, and we thank those of the community who also cheered on the participants, 20 miles is no small feat! Although the race is only hosted once a year, these volunteers are members of the local community who generously give up their Sunday morning to help ensure the race runs safely, and we are incredibly grateful for their support. Without them, the event simply could not take place.
Our volunteer marshals are there to help keep runners and road users safe, there were over 350 runners taking part, so it was a huge responsibility! On some occasions they may’ve asked drivers to slow down or wait briefly whilst runners passed or crossed the road. We understand that this can sometimes be frustrating and we do everything we can to minimise disruption while ensuring the safety of everyone involved. Our marshals wear high-visibility clothing to ensure they spotted easily by road users and runners, while also enhancing their own safety.
We would also ask that everyone remembers our marshals are volunteers who are doing their best to support the running of a safe community event, and we thank those who showed patience and courtesy whilst the race was taking place.
The race followed our 4 hour cut-off procedure, with our marshals removing existing signage for the race.
We always welcome constructive feedback as we look to improve the event each year. If you would like to share feedback with us, please complete our contact form here.
A massive thank you to everyone who made this year’s Hillingdon 20 possible, all the marshals who gave their time to ensure the safety of our participants, those who baked cakes and planned the event! Your hard work to enable to hosting of the Hillingdon 20 is greatly appreciated.
