Meet Our Club – Maria

Continuing our International Women’s Day celebrations, meet Maria!

Maria joined Hillingdon Athletic Club in 2007 and acted as Chief Marshal for the Finchley 20 (now Hillingdon 20) for 10 years!

What inspired you to get involved in athletics?

I did athletics at school (sprint & long jump) but never thought I would again, until I met some runners from the club back in the summer of 2007. I saw a flyer in the High St for salsa dancing and thought I would give it a go. I didn’t know anyone, but soon got chatting to people there. There was a group from Hillingdon AC and I was amazed when they said they had come from the Tuesday training session (running 10K). I thought wow, how fit are they. I started doing some short runs by myself, trying to build up time and distance and starting running round the Lido, where I bumped into them doing speedwork at the Boathouses. They encouraged me to come along to the clubhouse in Ruislip and I joined in September 2007. One of the best decisions I have made.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in athletics?

It is not easy to get started but remember we all had to start somewhere and there will be times when you really don’t want to get out of bed or life gets in the way, but stick with it.  Consistency really is key. Whether its a brisk walk or short quick run, or a longer 5 mile run through the woods, 15 mins HIIT, strength session… you will never regret a workout.

What’s the most rewarding part of volunteering at events?

I’ve been volunteering at club events since I joined in 2007. My first event was helping at a water station at the clubs flagship race, the Finchley 20 (Now Hillingdon20). It was such fun and totally inspiring to see the runners of all ages and abilities who were very appreciative of the marshals on the course.  I’ve continued to volunteer at the club, joining the communications committee and being chair for two years. I was then part of the social committee and helped organise various social events including quiz & karaoke nights and the clubs New Years Eve parties. I took on the role of organising volunteers and marshals for club fixtures and became chief marshal for the Finchley 20/ Hillingdon 20 for 10 years, relinquishing the role to Lindsey Hannigan two years ago. I’ve been competing in the Vets track & field fixtures since the beginning of my time at the club and took over as the ladies team manager in 2014 and still thoroughly enjoying competing with a great bunch of women. Volunteering for the club is very rewarding, it is great to give something back to the club who have supported me in my training given me a great sense of pride in the club.

Who is your biggest inspiration in athletics?

There are a number of well known athletes I admire however my biggest inspiration is for the club members past and present such as Harry Wild, Little Dave, Norma Cressy, Bob Beales and Roy Cnudde, to name a few, who have continued to train and support the club well into their eighties whom some are still running and training. I hope that will be me one day.

What’s your favourite snack or meal after a hard workout?

My go to snack would be a banana (not too ripe) as its quick and easy. If I had some peanut butter I would add that too. A handful of almonds is also a good option. If I have done some strength training I would try to have a high quality protein shake to maintain/build on muscle repair. Chocolate being my favourite flavour.

What’s your favourite event, and why?

It would be the long jump. The sheer joy of sprinting then leaping into the air. Like being a kid again. Its an event where you can always improve your technique.
