Matthew Fayers produced his dream of becoming a sub 4 minute miler on Saturday 14th February 2015 reports Stevan Dokic. Indoors at the Iowa State Classic, USA his chance materialised. Although in the B race Matt held his nerve and paced the paced the race well. Being pulled through at 3 minutes for the 3/4 mile mark, which was spot on. The race was taken on with the dream in sight. Placed 3rd at the 3/4 mark and not getting boxed in Matt didn’t panic. Saving his kick for the last 200m and push for the lead on the final bend and with a sprint finish took the win and a 3.59.55 time. At 20 years 6 months and 9 days of age has placed himself 37th fastest British all time indoor miler. Only 1 other athlete younger has ran faster indoors. Clilfton Bradley of City of Stoke, at 20 years and 4 months in 1985. Indoors personal bests times are always harder to achieve.
As a 17 year old Matt ran a 4.01.5 on an outdoor track for the mile with only 1 person younger than  Matt running faster. That was Steve Cram.
Since 11 years old Matt has always wanted to be a middle distance 800/1500m racer. Breaking club records from 800m, 1500m and the mile at u/15 up to u/20s levels. Now as a young u/23 he is carrying this dream on. At 17 years of age Matt won the British national indoors title against senior internationals. This was a surprise but to be a sub 4 minute miler is a dream come true.
