Activity Alliance: Jeff’s page
Jeff Shotton is busily preparing for the London Marathon. We asked him to share his experiences in the build up to the big day…..
My Journey to the London Marathon
Having failed the ballot entry for the London Marathon for the last few years, and with my wardrobe filling up with consolation tops, I was wondering if I would ever manage to run what is basically my local marathon. Interest in running has exploded in recent years – especially among younger age groups, and applications for the ballot entry are at an all-time high. So, when another rejection email arrived in June last year, it wasn’t exactly a shock.
I simply filled my calendar with other races and continued to train as normal – it just happened to be with a group of friends who were training for a marathon. Then, by chance, I found out Activity Alliance still had charity places available the day before registration closed. The post on Facebook wasn’t exactly recent, but neither had it been taken down. I emailed them – fully expecting to be told it had gone. Turned out it wasn’t. And they were very keen to sign me up (which we managed with around 3 hours to spare).
Training and Preparation
So, I have/had 5 weeks to go from semblance of marathon training to being fully ready. There don’t seem to be any training plans which follow this format, so I’m just going to push the load as high as my body will allow and taper as normal. What could possibly go wrong?! Not only that – I have a compressed time to collect for charity – hence the request.
Supporting Activity Alliance
My charity space is for Activity Alliance. The purpose of Activity Alliance is to promote inclusivity in sport for disabled people. Their vision is simple, bold, and ambitious – fairness for disabled people in sport and activity. Sport has excellent health benefits for all, but disabled people participate less than non-disabled people and are also twice as likely to be inactive. Please help me support them by donating to the cause so they can continue their great work.
Good luck Jeff!
